This is a very nice service used condition WWI field medic Tool Roll Bag, with red "Geneva Cross" marked on the top, over a brass plaque with U S surrounding a "Caduceus", the symbol of medicine used in the United States. The rod is the symbol of the Greek God Hermes, and was used to symbolize that someone was a messenger, and was not to be attacked, as was true for medics carrying the wounded away. It is similar in design to the "Rod of Asclepius", the symbol of the Greek god of medicine and healing, Asclepius, and in the U.S. the two have become somewhat synonymous. The tool roll unfolds to show many loops where clamps, knives, and other medic tools would be stored, and there are also some small pouches for bandages and other items. These were kept organized so that medics could quickly deploy the tools inside to stabilize the wounds before transporting the injured away. The case measures 8"W x 7"H x 2" when folded up. Condition is good, definitely showing lots of service and patina. This is an item that saw long service before being retired. It still has most of the original "Eagle" stamps, and displays very nicely.
Field Medic material is always high desirable, and this is a really nice example, perfect for any collection!
