It was formed in Egypt in 1938 as a Mobile Division. In December 1939 it became known as the 7th Armoured Division and its commander, Major-General O'Moore Creagh, adopted the jerboa (the desert rat) divisional sign. It was changed to the upright red jerboa, picked out in white on a black background, when the division was in Northwest Europe in 1944.
