Five-pointed red enamel star with gilt bronze laurel wreath between the arms, with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a circular central deep blue medallion with the gilt arms of the R.S.R (Republica Socialista România = Socialist Republic of Romania) imposed within a yellow enamel ring inscribed in gilt letters ‘MERITUL MILITAR’ (Military Merit); the reverse plain; on original ribbon and pentagonal hanger; in fitted embossed case of issue with slight surface marks. The Order was instituted in 1954 in three classes and at the same time as the Medal of Military Merit (Medalia Meritul Militar) to reward 15, 20 and 25 years’ blameless service in the Romanian Armed Forces. The 3rd class (as here) was bronze, the 2nd classs silvered and the 1st class gilt. In 1965, when the name of the state was changed to the Romanian Socialist Republic, the letters ‘RSR’ replaced ‘RPR’. The Order was suppressed at the end of 1989
