Initially relying on very dark and static retouched photographs, the magazine quickly opted to give prominence to high-quality color illustrations, a quintessential British "specialty," where watercolor and pastel created a kind of symbolic shimmer that countered the violence of the fighting on the ground. All the while, it did not fail to assert British military might at sea, in the air, and on the battlefield. The French press, by comparison, preferred engravings (often from photographs) and focused on the events themselves
