Officially termed as, 'Denim overalls, 1939 pattern', this working dress uniform was a copy of the serge Battledress. Primarily intended for dirty work and whilst carrying out various labour-intensive duties ('spud bashing', for example) the overalls were to be worn over the prescribed underwear. Void of insignia (apart from rank badges) this uniform was however used on active service, notably in Italy, and later in North-West Europe when in winter it was often worn over the conventional serge BD for extra protection in the cold. Denims were frequently used by tank crews and also issued on a wsize ide scale to the Local Defence Volunteers ('LDV' - later the Home Guard) as a stop-gap until serge uniforms could be obtained.
