The Army Gymnasium based at Voortrekkerhoogte was first designated Military Gymnasium 1st February 1950. Originally the purpose was to provide the SA Army with a source of potential Junior Leaders. In 1957 the first Signal Troop was established at the Gymnasium and was apparently announced as “You standing over there, you are signalers”. 1963 The Gymnasium changed from a training unit to become a full time infantry battalion. In 1967 The Army Gymnasium moved from Voortrekkerhoogte to Heidelberg, Transvaal and was referred to as the “Big Move”. The Army Gymnasium occupied what was the Teacher Training College to much opposition by the local community. The Army Gymnasium became fully operational after the “Big Move” on the 1st January 1968.
