21 Maintenance Unit was first established in 1976 as the Logistical Unit for 84 Motorised Brigade. It was not until 1980 that it was called upon to become actively involved in duty. The unit's first experience was training exercises at Lohatla. The first active duty was in 1981 in the operational area in SWA, then again at Rundu in 1982. Thereafter the unit was involved in training exercises, another operational active duty and township unrest. In the short period of the Unit's existence it has gone from strength to strength, slowly establishing its own identity and tradition..
