Every infantry or armoured regiment had its own insignia. The Eagle of the R.A.F. was worn on both upper sleeves by all those below the rank of Warrant Officer 1st Class and airmen of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve wore a "V.R." below it. The Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve served as an entry point for the much needed aircrew and pilots during the Second World War.
