The Chindits were a long range jungle penetration group deployed by the British deep behind the Japanese lines in Burma. They were the largest special operations force of WW2. Led by the eccentric General Orde Wingate, they were supplied and given close air support by US AAF Air Commando units. To avoid the need to ship gear halfway around the world, Chindits were outfitted almost entirely from in-theater sources, with bush hats from Australia, and uniforms, rifles and bayonets from India
