"Such type of beilpicke were used by the German pioneers & engineers of times of the World War I. During the WWI each German infantry division had assigned one or two pioneer ( engineer ) regiments. The basic responsibilities of engineers were: -building and reparing bridges -building and repairing roads -removing obstacles -constructing obstacles (barbed wire) -building trenches and bunkers -building fortifications and entrenchments -raise telegraph lines -supporting infantry during fortifications sieges To cope with all the engineering tasks, the pioneers used special equipment and trench tools, like this one beilpicke (combined tool axe hatchet with pick). The beilpicke is in very good preserved authentically condition for its age with original wooden handle.leathwr scabbard dated 1915
