"The German Life Saving Association (Deutschen Lebensrettungsgesellschaft) or DLRG was founded in 1913 as an offshoot of the German Swimming League in order to train persons in water safety.
On September 25, 1933, the president f the DLRG placed his organization under the overall control of the Reich Sports League, and a series of awards was instituted corresponding to various degrees of proficiency.
The first level award was the "Grundschein' and was a basic certificate and the bronze lapel pin with the word "Grundschein". 
The second level was the "Leistungschein" with more rigorous qulification tests and the award of a certificate and a silver lapel pin with the word "Leistungschein".
The highest level was for an instuctor and resulted in the award of the "Lehrschein" certificate and corresponding silver lapel pin."
