In 1915, Craonne was a significant location during the First World War. The town was completely devastated by the war, and after the conflict, it was rebuilt elsewhere. The area where the final version of the "Chanson de Craonne" was created is the village of Craonne on the Californian plateau, where the fierce battles took place on April 16, 1917. This battle was considered the last straw that led to the mutiny among French soldiers, who refused to return to their trenches after the disastrous and futile offensive at the Chateau de la Daurière, resulting in over 30,000 soldiers being killed. The "Chanson de Craonne" was later banned for many years from radio broadcasts. The exact author of the song remains unknown, despite efforts to identify him.
