The bayonet was originally intended for combat purposes. However, fancier versions were made which had only the purpose of enhancing the appearance of a uniform. These were known as dress bayonets. Some of the characteristics of the non-combat version include chromed blades, stag handles, ornaments added to the handles or scabbards, etc.

Some of the dress bayonets were based on the body of the K98 combat bayonet. In some cases there will be a runner for the lugnut in the rifle barrel, but it will not be functional. The dress bayonet cannot be attached to the rifle even though it may look like it.
