The history of the 75th Regimental Combat Team started with the birth of the 5307th Composite Unit in October 1943 under the command of Brig. Gen. Frank D. Merrill. The unit trained for long-range penetration behind enemy lines in Japanese-held Burma. The unit, known as Merrill's Marauder's, was the first U.S. ground combat force to meet the enemy in World War II on continental Asia. The Marauders were awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation and two campaign streamers for outstanding service. In July 1944, the 5332nd Brigade was activated in India, two weeks prior to the inactivation of the 5307th and made responsible for organization of the 475th Regiment from the nucleous of the 5307th and fresh volunteers. The 475th saw action at the Tonka - Wo Hling sector of Burma. The unit was inactivated in China in 1945. On 20 November 1954, it was reactivated on Okinawa as the 75th Infantry Regiment. The 75th Regimental Combat Team was composed of the 75th Infantry Regiment, 612th Field Artillery Battalion, HQ&HQ Company, 84th AAA Battery, 84th Engineer Company (Combat), Heavy Mortar Company, Medical Company, Service Company, and Tank Company. The 75th Regimental Combat Team was inactivated in March 1956 on Okinawa.
