The Standing Naval Force Atlantic (STANAVFORLANT) was established in 1968 as a NATO-led rapid reaction marine force. It consisted of up to ten ships including frigates, destroyers and tankers brought together as a permanent peacetime naval force. The US, Britain, Germany, The Netherlands, Canada and Spain (from 2000) are permanent contributors of ships occasionally joined by ships from other NATO countries
