Introduced in July 1915, the French 'Adrian Pattern' shrapnel helmet was later adopted by many other countries, notably Belgium, Rumania, Russia, Serbia and the United States during the First World War. Belgian helmets were painted brown and featured a lion-faced crest attached to the front.
