United Nations Mission In Sudan was established on 24 March 2005 by adoption of the Security Council Resolution 1590 and was initially established for a period of six months. This was later extended. According to its mandate, UNMIS is tasked with supporting the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. UNMIS is also tasked with facilitating the voluntary return of refugees and displaced persons; providing demining assistance; and contributing towards international efforts to protect and promote human rights in Sudan. New Zealand Defence Force personnel have served with UNMIS since 17 September 2005 as military observers and staff officers.
