The Henry rifle, developed by Alexander Henry of Edinburgh, was considered for military issue during the late 1860s. In the event however, only its seven-groove rifling was adopted, coupled with the Martini breech mechanism to create the Martini-Henry rifle. Production of the Henry rifle was licensed to the National Arms and Ammunition Company, who continued to seek military orders for the weapon. Then only significant sales were to Australia
